We are happy to announce that we’re now offering online access to the Philosopher’s Index.

Produced by the Philosopher’s Information Center, this current and comprehensive bibliographic database covers scholarly research in all major fields of philosophy. Considered the most thorough index of journal literature on the subject, this resource features author-written abstracts covering scholarly research published in journals and books, including contributions to anthologies and book reviews.

The Philosopher’s Index contains research published since 1940 and includes more than 500,000 records.  With more than 1,500 journal titles from over 450 different publishers, the database covers all fields of philosophy, including aesthetics, axiology, philosophy of education, epistemology, ethics, philosophy of history, philosophy of language, logic, metaphysics, philosophical anthropology, meta-philosophy, political philosophy, philosophy of science, social philosophy, and the philosophy of religion. The publications covered in this comprehensive database hail from 139 countries and appear in 37 languages.

The T&F Social Science & Humanities Library provides online access to a broad range of journal content in 14 subject areas. Taylor & Francis Group is the largest global publisher in the Social Science Edition of the recently-released 2012 Thomson Reuters Journal Citation Reports (JCR)®.

www.a-z.lu et www.dictionnaire-auteurs.lu : nouvelle interconnexion

La Bibliothèque nationale de Luxembourg et le Centre national de littérature ont présenté lors des Journées du Livre de Walferdange la nouvelle interconnexion entre le moteur de recherche www.a-z.lu et le Dictionnaire des auteurs luxembourgeois en ligne www.dictionnaire-auteurs.lu. Cette coopération entre les deux institutions fournit une plus-value aux utilisateurs des deux outils, qu’ils soient chercheurs, enseignants, étudiants, élèves ou autres lecteurs, en leur offrant une passerelle entre les livres et leurs auteurs.

Un lecteur qui consulte sur www.a-z.lu les références d’un ouvrage écrit par un écrivain luxembourgeois peut, en cliquant sur l’icône « détails », puis sur le nom de l’auteur, accéder directement à la biographie de cet auteur publiée par le Centre national de littérature. Comme le Dictionnaire des auteurs luxembourgeois est publié en langues allemande et française, le lecteur pourra consulter la biographie dans la langue de son choix. À l’inverse, en naviguant dans le Dictionnaire des auteurs, le lecteur accède, en cliquant sur le titre d’un ouvrage figurant dans la bibliographie de l’auteur de son choix, directement à la référence bibliographique correspondante dans www.a-z.lu. Il voit ainsi d’un coup d’œil dans quelles bibliothèques luxembourgeoises il pourra consulter ou emprunter ce titre.

Dans le cadre de sa stratégie de développement de services en ligne, la Bibliothèque nationale de Luxembourg (BnL) a lancé au printemps 2013 un outil de recherche nouvelle génération. Ce nouveau moteur de recherche, accessible via le portail www.a-z.lu , permet aux internautes de découvrir facilement, à partir d’un seul point d’accès, les collections des 50 bibliothèques du réseau bibnet.lu, les contenus numérisés par la BnL dans le cadre de son projet eluxemburgensia et une grande partie des publications de la bibliothèque numérique findit.lu.

La BnL a développé un outil qui est à la fois intuitif et performant. Outre la rapidité de la recherche, il offre une présentation claire des résultats ainsi que des accès directs aux documents numériques. La BnL implémentera bientôt une version adaptée à l’utilisation de www.a-z.lu par équipements mobiles.

Édité par le Centre national de littérature à Mersch, le Dictionnaire des auteurs luxembourgeois en ligne présente des auteurs qui, depuis 1815, ont participé à la vie littéraire du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg, indépendamment de leur nationalité et de la langue littéraire choisie, et qui peuvent se prévaloir d’au moins une monographie autonome littéraire. L’utilisateur y trouve les données bio-bibliographiques de ces auteurs ainsi que leur évolution dans le contexte de l’histoire de la littérature. Quelque 1.100 auteurs avec leurs pseudonymes et leurs variations onomastiques, 7.600 œuvres en 12 langues ainsi que des informations sur des prix littéraires, des traductions, des adaptations audiovisuelles et des sources d’archives sont accessibles en ligne, en version mobile et en application pour iPhone et iPad. L’app fut déjà téléchargée plus de 1200 fois ; la version mobile fut consultée cette année plus de 40.000 fois, avec un total de plus de 1.600 000 pages.

Scirus is set to retire in early 2014

Scirus, Elsevier’s free search engine, will be shutting down in January 2014. In a message to users, they stated no more content will be added starting immediately.

Elsevier’s statement:

“With regret we are writing to inform you that Scirus, Elsevier’s free science-specific search engine, will be discontinued in early 2014. While a firm retirement date has not yet been set, it will likely be sometime by or before 31 January 2014.

We realize that this decision may disappoint you. The reality is that Scirus has lost its competitive edge to other platforms and services. Rather than attempt to catch up, Elsevier has instead made the difficult decision to retire Scirus and redirect even more attention to the continuous improvement of our core products. Our company fully expects that these efforts will yield more impact and therefore be of greater benefit to our customers and their research communities, allowing us to serve our content partners more effectively.
Effectively immediately, Elsevier has stopped adding new content sources for indexing on Scirus and we are no longer adding or supporting any new Open URL library partners. The Open URL program in which you are currently participating will continue until Scirus is retired.”

ProQuest implements CAPTCHAs

Some days ago, ProQuest implemented CAPTCHAs because they have detected bots attempting to download information from their databases without permission. Using CAPTCHA will help protect the rights of copyright holders by ensuring that information is accessed only by authorized users.
Please find below some FAQs concerning CAPTCHAs in ProQuest Databases:

What is a CAPTCHA?
A CAPTCHA (or Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) is used to detect if activity is coming from a “real” human – not from an automated script, commonly referred to as a bot.

Why has Proquest introduced the use of CAPTCHAs?
We have introduced CAPTCHAs because, like many other online services, we’ve detected bots attempting to download copyrighted information.

Which products do the CAPTCHAs impact?
This will apply to all databases on the ProQuest platform (e.g Factiva, ProQuest Central, ProQuest Dissertations and Theses, etc.).

When will ProQuest users see CAPTCHAs?
We have analyzed usage on the platform and picked a usage threshold for CAPTCHAs that is designed to minimize the impact for our users. We anticipate that the vast majority of users will not see CAPTCHA prompts, and these will occur in a very small percentage of users’ research sessions.

Can customers follow links to our content without entering a CAPTCHA?
Customers following links to access some content types may see CAPTCHAs immediately. For example, a user following a direct link to a document stored in a browser bookmark may see a CAPTCHA before being able to access the document. Likewise, a customer accessing content via Summon, direct links in a Learning Management System, or an email alert may be required to enter a CAPTCHA before viewing documents.

Is this a permanent measure?
Data security is continually evolving, and ProQuest is always looking for better ways to enhance the security of our services. At this stage, the use of a CAPTCHA has been identified as an effective security method. We will continue to evaluate additional security enhancements.

Are CAPTCHAs accessible for the visually impaired?
Yes. We are using Google Technology to generate our CAPTCHAs. More information on accessibility is available here.

DUDEN auf MUNZINGER Online: “Die deutsche Rechtschreibung” – 26. Auflage

Wir freuen uns, mitteilen zu können, dass seit einigen Tagen die komplett überarbeitete 26. Auflage des DUDEN-Standardwerks „Die deutsche Rechtschreibung“ auf Munzinger Online verfügbar ist. In der neuen Auflage, auf die wir bereits Zugriff haben, finden sich ca. 5000 neue Wörter von der Arabellion über den Shitstorm bis hin zum Vollpfosten. Mit dieser Aktualisierung des Wortschatzes bewegen Sie sich im Wandel der Gegenwartssprache stets auf der sicheren Seite. Die bewährten gelben Hervorhebungen empfohlener DUDEN-Schreibweisen bei mehreren richtigen Möglichkeiten wurden selbstverständlich beibehalten.

Der Wortschatz hat sich in den letzten Jahren weiterentwickelt. Wer auf dem aktuellen Stand der Sprache sein und alle neuen Wörter richtig schreiben will, braucht den neuen Duden.
